Local legend states that French explorers named the town after a voyage over the muddy Chippewa River exclaiming “Clear Water” when they happened upon the pristine Eau Claire River. Eau Claire was founded in 1856 and grew swiftly as a lumber capital over the next decades. Today, it's the biggest city in the northwestern corner of Wisconsin. Visitors can see the historic Eau Claire paper mill as well as spend many hours on Water Street visiting its shops and taverns.
